Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske in The Bronx, NY) in “To Have and Have Not,” 1944. She was 20 years old. The chemistry between Bogart (who was 45) and Bacall on screen was obvious to everyone. They married the following year. Bacall was the only child of Natalie (née Weinstein), a secretary who later legally changed her surname to Bacal, and William Perske who worked in sales.
According to Bacall, her mother emigrated from Iași, the Kingdom of Romania, through Ellis Island, and her father was born in New Jersey to parents who were born in Valozhyn, in the Russian Empire.
